How I Registered My ABN and Started Freelancing in NSW
Quitting the corporate structure to work for yourself in Australia sounds incredibly freeing, but the paperwork often scares people away. The truth is, starting out as a sole trader is surprisingly straightforward if you know what to look for.
Your absolute first step is applying for an Australian Business Number (ABN). It is completely free through the official government business registry website. Once you have that active number, you are legally ready to invoice clients, track your business expenses, and manage your early revenue.
However, getting an ABN is only 10% of the battle. You still need to manage client contracts, calculate your quarterly tax obligations, and protect your workflow. Because this can get confusing quickly, I have packaged my exact personal system, along with ready-to-use invoice templates, into my comprehensive Australia Self-Employment eBook available on the shop page.
